Do your research - Gathering background information on employers is a crucial element in successful interview preparation. You will need to be prepared to answer the questions “What do you know about our company?” and “Why do you want to work here?”
Knowing as much as possible about the company’s past performance and future plans can make your interview more interactive and could be just the leg up you need in a competitive job market. Before the interview review the company’s web site and don’t be afraid to contact EZ Executive Search to request additional details on the position you are interviewing for more details about the company.
Be ready to answer questions – without talking too much - When interviewers ask for an example of a time when you did something, they are asking behavioral interview questionsWhen you have not prepared ahead of time, you may ramble when answering interview questions, sometimes talking yourself right out of the job. Prepare for the interview by reading through the job posting, matching your skills with the position’s requirements and relating only the information that shows how your skills can benefit the company. Being succinct in your responses exemplifies a professional approach and respect for your interviewer’s time.
Listen – and ask questions - From the very beginning of the interview, your interviewer is giving you information, either directly or indirectly. Good communication skills include listening and letting the person know you heard what was said. Observe your interviewer, and match that style and pace. This will make the conversation flow more smoothly and give you ideas for asking questions during the interview process. In addition to listening and developing questions during your interview, also prepare several questions that focus on learning more about the company (and not about pay, benefits or other items that are more about you than the company). Questions show that you have a sincere interest in what is going on at the company and about their overall business philosophies and plans for the future. Asking questions also gives you the opportunity to find out if this is the right place for you. The best questions come from listening to what you’re asked during the interview and asking for additional information but having advance questions gives you the confidence of being fully prepared.
Practice, practice, practice - This applies to both verbal and non-verbal communication. You want to be comfortable during the interview and prepared to answer questions with confidence. You also want to be sure that you are standing straight, making eye contact and connecting with a firm handshake. That first nonverbal impression can be a great beginning — or quick ending — to your interview.
Dress the part - Today’s casual dress codes do not give you permission to dress as “they” do when you interview. It is important to know what to wear to an interview and to be well-groomed. Whether you wear a suit or something less formal depends on the company culture and the position you are seeking. Ask your EZ Executive recruiter for guidance on the company dress code as well as appropriate interview clothing before the interview.
Be on time and bring an extra copy of your resume - Both of these are indications of professionalism and preparation – key elements that every employer is looking for. “On time” means reaching ten to fifteen minutes prior to reporting time. Get directions in advance and plan for traffic. Know the name of your interviewer (If you’re not sure of the time, call EZ Executive and ask prior to the interview.). Offer them a copy of your resume at the beginning of the interview. Do not assume that they have one – or that it is readily available. This can save them valuable time and show your professionalism as well.
Don’t be overly confident, too familiar and use appropriate language - The interview is a business meeting to talk about your qualifications and fit with the company. This is not about making a new friend. That means you should use a level of professionalism that includes:
- Using professional language during the interview. Be aware of any inappropriate slang words or references to age, race, religion, politics or sexual orientation — these topics could send you out the door very quickly.
- Not being overconfident or arrogant. There is a fine balance between confidence, professionalism and modesty. Even if you’re putting on a performance to demonstrate your ability, overconfidence is as bad, if not worse, as being too reserved.
- Observing common sense courtesy including turning off your cell phone, following non-smoking policies, no chewing gum and not taking in your own drink (although accepting one from the interviewer is appropriate).
- There is a fine balance between being at ease and being too comfortable. It is important to bring energy and enthusiasm to the interview and to ask questions, but remember that you are still a candidate seeking a job.
Thank the interviewer - As your interview concludes, thank the interviewer for their time and note that you look forward to hearing from them. Once you have completed the interviewer, contact your EZ Executive recruiter to let them know how it went and what follow-up steps you can do. This could include sending a thank-you note or email to your interviewer so be sure you have your interviewer’s contact information.
